On The Bright Side

What a beautiful week!  The sun and warmth came back.  There was lots of seeding to do in the propagation greenhouse; possibly my favorite task and place to be in winter.  It feels like we are getting things done (so much easier when the weather is nice). Trapping gophers, spreading compost, weeding the overwintered crops (so much easier when the weeds grow slow), moving some perennials around and seeding one last round of cool season (hardy annual) flowers like poppies, larkspur, bells of Ireland and nigella. 

I saw the first tulips peeking up through the soil.  eek!  Won't be long now.  We found a bunch of gems out in the field to harvest and bring to market.  A new beautiful batch of arugula (looking surprisingly lush and tender) along with dill, baby bok choy, head lettuce (I can't believe it survived winter with only row cover, its not the hardiest vegetable), kale and some new little radishes.

I found the first few (tiny) anemone flowers this week.  It's hard not reminisce about last year when we were already picking them by the bucketful at this time.  But we planted later this fall and with a cooler/wetter winter, it is to be expected.  Actually cold winters with moisture are quite good for the soil and preventing pest and diseases the following season, so I can't really complain.
