What a beautiful week!  The sun and warmth came back.  There was lots of seeding to do in the propagation greenhouse; possibly my favorite task and place to be in winter.  It feels like we are getting things done (so much easier when the weather is nice)

This is the week we wait for all year, when the stars align.  The week when all the good crops come in simultaneously.  We have a mountain of green beans, a literal ton of melons, the eggplant is abundant, the field tomatoes are in, the flowers are off the hook, we have okra, black eyed peas, cucumbers, peppers and so, so much more.

Hi, we're here still.  It's been a while. Time to catch up.  
First off, Happy New Year.  This is our slowest time of the year on the farm, mainly because it's cold and dark and anything that is growing is creeping along. Yet, it is still so packed full of important things happening on the farm. Mainly, planning and preparation for the busy year ahead.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a great way for people who believe in real food to support a farm, try new things, and grow a healthy family.  But it is not the only way to do these things.  

So, what’s the difference between supporting a farmer through a CSA versus at a farmers market?  Why would a person consider signing up for a csa instead of these other options?

Follow these tips to help make your flowers last longer. Trim at least half an inch of stem off your flowers before you put them in a vase and each time you change the water. Dried out stems won’t take up water as well as fresh cut ones. Use sharp scissors or snips when cutting your stems. Dull scissors will smash or damage plant cells and prevent stems from effectively taking up the water.

While we grow year round, this is the time of year for many seasonal shifts as we head into winter.  It's a nice time to reflect on the year.  All in all, it has been a great year for crops.  I definitely cannot say this every year.  And I still never quite know the magic recipe for a good year.
